10 business process management (BPM)-trends voor 2023

The field of business process management (BPM) is evolving rapidly. Experts at BPM Consult share ten trends that will have a major impact on the direction of business process management in 2023.

1: Augmented reality for work instructions

Good work instructions and information at the workplace have become more important post-Covid for getting things right first time. But no one is interested in dusty manuals, let alone ones that are impossible to find, hidden away in a system.

Soon, employees will scan a QR code on site, after which their phone will show them everything they need to understand the task, not just at that moment but even several steps ahead: with a simple tap, they can see how to carry out a task, what to pay attention to and even the intended outcome. Goodbye paper manuals, welcome virtual instructions and information.

2: The suggestion box is going digital

Attentive employees remain a valuable source of process improvement. However, many suggestion boxes are empty. That is about to change. The suggestion box is becoming more accessible: a photo with a comment in an app, and with the help of natural language processing techniques and smart analysis, it becomes the starting point of an improvement workflow.

3: Process mining

Process mining techniques are becoming more user-friendly and more multifunctional. Simple pilot setups will benefit from this by mapping the course of test processes through mining. With the help of process mining, process owners can quickly and easily test process improvements.

4: From plain text to data liberation

In 2023, companies will continue unlocking hidden data fields. They will adopt a more information-driven approach and make all data usable. Valuable data locked in plain documents will be liberated and transferred as data fields into the data warehouse. There, it will be combined to create meaningful information.

5: Do-it-yourself ERP is gaining ground

For years, it has been a trend to customise ERP systems. This often resulted in situations so complex that only expensive specialists could decipher them.

In 2023, organisations are moving away from complex ERP packages and increasingly opting for a best-practice blueprint. With the help of low-code, process teams can build their own workflows.

6: Quality and IT are working together

The tussle over process models will be won by… collaboration! In 2023, process owners will make significant progress in eliminating duplication and simplifying things.

Process models will become more robust by using a shared foundation. In other words, building together on a single platform, with specific parts of a workflow accessible separately. Doing more with less.

7: The board helps steer

The board of process owners will play a stronger role in organisational governance. They will become the designated group for assessing the feasibility of legislation and new strategies. Viewing matters through an end to end lens will become the standard perspective. Gone are the lengthy policy and evaluation cycles, replaced by one-day response sessions and quick review rounds.

8: Backlog planning makes a comeback

Scrum Agile has replaced command-and-control management in many places. However, energetic sprinting can easily mask a frozen foundation in the work backlog. In 2023, we will see hybrid approaches emerge, with sprints geared towards planned deliverables. No more headless sprints. With a well-defined backlog plan, more agile efforts will truly hit their mark.

9: The checklist is dead; long live the checklist!

We all know that, as humans, we can benefit from a few memory aids. But professionals often dismiss checklists, seeing them as tools for beginners they have outgrown. Dangerous thinking! True professional maturity means recognising that support tools are not such a bad idea after all. In 2023, using a checklist is cool again.

10: Utrecht international BPM capital

Alright, here’s one with a twist – but it’s true: in September, the international BPM community will be coming to Utrecht for a week of conferences on processes. Utrecht University is taking the lead. And that is something we can be proud of.
